Most adults get this wrong – but I’m intrigued to see if you can solve this tricky math problem

Solve the tricky math problem

Regardless of your relationship with math, we use it every day in our lives, but not the advanced formulas and complex equations we used to have in high school. And now that I’m older, I like to open up a math book now and then to take my brain for a jog down memory lane and see if my math skills are still sharp.

Afterward, my head feels much clearer and fresh – and I have a lot of fun doing it. It’s quite exciting to see how much you remember from your school years.

That is why I thought that maybe today, we could try to solve an equation I found online – which is apparently for 13-year-olds. I think the level of difficulty is just right – not too easy, not too difficult. It is, however, vital that you know the math operations rules.

This is key in solving the task ahead.

What is the answer to this tricky math problem?

8 – 2 ÷ 1/2 + 1 = ?

If you solve from left to right, you’ll probably get the number 13.

However, that is wrong, because you must follow the order of operations. Which states a universal order for solving math problems.

You must start with the division

So the order of operations states that in this case, we should start by solving the division.

2 ÷ 0.5 = 4

We then are left with “8 – 4 + 1 =?

Now, with the division out of the way, we can finally solve from left to right – which leads us to the final solution below.

The correct answer is 5.
