The Eternal Moisture of Marital Devotion

A woman was laying incredibly sick in bed, sensing that her time on earth was drawing to a close. She looked over at her husband, who was sitting faithfully by her side, and decided to ask a very specific question. “Honey, be completely honest with me. If I pass away, how long will it take for you to move on and marry another woman?”

The husband, wiping a tear from his eye, held her hand tightly. “Oh, my sweet love, how could you even ask that? I swear to you, I could never bring another woman into my life until your grave is completely, thoroughly dry.”

Deeply touched by his romantic promise, the woman smiled, and a few days later, she peacefully passed away.

True to his word, the husband was determined to be a man of honor. He wanted to move on with his life, but he refused to break his promise. So, every single afternoon, he walked down to the cemetery to check on the plot. But week after week, month after month, the soil on her grave remained dark, damp, and completely saturated.

Five years passed. Then ten years. Soon, fifteen whole years had flown by. The husband had gone from a youthful widower to a frustrated middle-aged man, yet every time he visited the cemetery, the grass on her grave looked like it had just endured a tropical rainforest downpour. It was a geological miracle.

One evening, determined to figure out why this specific patch of dirt defied the laws of evaporation, he arrived at the graveyard a bit earlier than usual. As he approached the plot, he spotted a figure standing over the headstone holding a large, empty plastic bucket.

He jogged over and realized it was his brother-in-law.

“James?” the husband asked, completely bewildered. “What on earth are you doing out here in the dark with a bucket?”

James sighed heavily, wiping the sweat from his forehead. “Oh, hey man. I’m just fulfilling my sister’s dying wish. Right before she passed away, she made me swear an absolute blood oath that I would walk up to this cemetery every single day and water her grave.”

The husband’s eyes went wide, his brain short-circuited, and he collapsed directly onto the damp mud, completely unconscious.
