The majority of us can reflect on a long and arduous career by the time we reach retirement age, and we can look forward to years of well-deserved rest.
A 90-year-old Texas woman named Melba Mebane just announced her retirement from her retail job at the department store where she had worked for.
Well, 74 years, is undoubtedly among the rare people who is as deserving of a break.
“Even [with] the changing times, from where she started to where we are now in the modern world, her values and everything still stand.”
Reportedly, Melba was always a positive influence at work. She arrived each day with a grin on her face and a strong work ethic.
According to Melba, throughout her 74-year career as a worker, she never once called in ill or skipped a shift.
“Melba sets the tone for everything, every expectation, every customer service quality that we look for in a luxury experience,” store manager Saenz added.
Meanwhile, Melba’s son, Terry Mebane, said: “She’s a grinder. The store would open at 10 and she wanted her parking spot, so she got there between 9 o’clock and 9:15.”
Additionally, Melba made a habit of taking shorter lunch breaks. Terry claimed this was “because she knew that people often took off [during] their lunch hour to come to the mall to buy what they were going buy, and she didn’t want to miss her opportunity.”
In her 70s and 80s, Melba continued to work 40 hours every week.
“I loved everybody there, and I loved to go to work,” Melba explained.
At a retirement celebration held by Dillar’s for the nonagenarian, Melba received a “Beyond Excellence” award in the shape of a plaque that will stay in the shop.
