Amber Luke, an Australian model known as “Dragon Girl” because of her many tattoos and body alterations, is having difficulty finding work owing to her unusual appearance. With 99% of her body tattooed, she admits that her work opportunities have been limited but remains unrepentant. She puts it this way: “I don’t want to work for a company that’s shallow-minded and can’t look past my image.”
Amber spent approximately $250,000 on her metamorphosis, which included eyeball tattoos that temporarily blinded her and a variety of other changes. She has received both admiration and criticism for her decisions, with some openly criticizing her appearance.
Despite the criticism, Amber feels accomplished and believes her physical alterations were deserved. She published a snapshot of herself as a teenager, when she was depressed and suicidal, and now as a confident adult. Reflecting on her experiences, she acknowledges the anguish she felt during her transitions but expresses contentment with her choices.
Amber’s story illuminates society’s notion of beauty and originality, emphasizing the value of acceptance and tolerance.
