If you’re interested, here’s just a quick glance at the basic Astrology terms and definitions you should know about, to start studying and understanding Astrology.
Astrology is “the study of how the stars, planets and other cosmic objects move, the relationship between them and how these influence human life and the world around us”
Horoscope is “an astrological chart or diagram depicting the position of the sun, moon and planets at a particular place and time”
The elements and their respective signs:
Fire (Aries, Leo, Sagittarius), Earth (Capricorn, Taurus, Virgo), Air (Gemini, Aquarius, Libra), Water (Pisces, Cancer, Scorpio)
In regards to a relationship: Brownstone observes that there is a general compatibility between people who share complementary elements within their sun signs (e.g., water, earth; water, water; fire, air; fire, fire; etc.). However, the moon signs, ascendants, and lunar nodes should also be considered.
Sun Sign:
Determined by what date you were born, this sign is the one people generally interact with when they read their “daily horoscope.” For example, “if you’re an Aries, that would mean the sun was going through the constellation of Aries at the time you were born.” The sun sign is categorized according to Brownstone as your sense of self, your identity, and how you express yourself when you are feeling good and at ease.
In regards to a relationship:
Compatibility between the sun signs of two people is an indicator of basic affinity. Brownstone elucidates that in general “signs that are of the same element share a compatibility. For instance, an Aries and a Sagittarius both bring a similar energy [fire] to the table: enthusiasm, intention, and action.” However, “sometimes what can lead to attraction is something that is a little different from you. For instance, you could have a Scorpio and a Leo, and there will be this tremendous passion because the differences in the signs are very appealing.” Brownstone adds that when it comes to dating and compatibility, sometimes “that tension is what contributes to a greater level of excitement in the relationship. Especially for people that are younger or are in their 20’s—they kind of thrive on that passion.”
Moon Sign:
Determined by the position of where the moon was at the exact time you were born. This sign governs your instinctive, inner needs. It is representative of your mother, your family, and your home environment.
In regards to a relationship:
Compatibility between moon signs is a plus. For example, if your moon sign is in Pisces [water], you might find your needs very well met by a Scorpio [also water]. Brownstone mentions that when it comes to a more committed relationship, the moon sign becomes especially significant: “If you are looking at someone, even if they are younger, who wants to live with someone else and settle down, you will want to make sure that their moon signs are compatible because the moon is your instinctive nature and how you get your needs met—what you are comfortable with emotionally. If you are looking for a long-term relationship, the moon signs of you and your partner should be compatible.”
Rising Sign (also known as Ascendant):
Determined by the Zodiacal sign that was ascending or “rising” on the eastern horizon at the time that you were born. This sign can be categorized and understood as the general first impression you give off, or “the first thing people see when they meet you.” According to Brownstone, it is “your mask,” and “how you express yourself in a new situation.”
In regards to a relationship:
Because the rising signs of two people dictate initial attraction, this is one of the areas where compatibility between the elements is not necessary. In fact, as Brownstone points out, “tension” can be a plus. And, as the age-old saying goes: Opposites attract. Hence, someone who has their ascendant in Capricorn might be attracted to an Aries, and vice-versa. Brownstone adds that the rising sign is also opposite the marriage house, or partnership house.
Lunar Nodes:
Not classified as “signs,” the nodes are, rather, the mathematical, astronomical “points” at which the orbit of the moon crosses the ecliptic (the sun’s path on the “celestial sphere”). Determined by the exact position of the sun and moon when you were born, the nodes function on an axis: There is a southern node, which, according to Brownstone “shows the accumulation of knowledge and habits from your family lineage that you have, what you have accomplished, and what you already know.” And, of course, a northern node, which “is representative of where you are going, what you need to go toward, achieve, and accomplish.” The two nodes are always opposites since they are on an axis. For instance, if your southern node is in Cancer, your northern node is in Capricorn by default.
In regards to a relationship:
The nodes should be “conjunct.” In other words, if your nodes overlap, you have a good chance of your paths crossing. Brownstone explains that “as an astrologer [examining a relationship], one of the things I look for are the lunar nodes.” The north node “is demonstrative of what you are trying to fulfill in this life.” The south node is representative of “past-life connections.” The nodal points of contact dictate “there is something karmic to work out within this lifetime with that person” (the idea of fate). Romeo and Juliet, for instance, would definitely have had some nodal conjunctions.
