A woman wakes up to laughter after being in a coma for five years, all because of her mother’s love and a small joke.
In the fall of 2017, Jennifer Flewellen’s ordinary morning trip took a devastating turn. Shortly after dropping her small sons off at school, she passed out and collided with a pole.
While at work, Peggy Means, her mother, received the call that would change her life. At the time, Flewellen, 35, was in serious condition. She was put into a coma using medical means. The outlook was dismal.
Doctors doubted her survival and suggested ending life support. Means firmly declined, rooted in her faith. “I said, ‘No, it’s in God’s hands,’” she proclaimed, choosing hope over despair.
Peggy’s faith was often put to the test. She remembered a moment when a respiratory nurse expressed doubts about Jennifer’s prognosis, stating that she would only get worse. Peggy’s response was firm and protective. “Don’t you ever say that to me again, and never say it around my daughter,” she insisted. In her heart, Peggy believed Jennifer’s spirit was still vibrant, urging her to fight negativity at every turn.
Peggy coordinated Jennifer’s transfers across facilities over the years as she looked for the finest care. Despite her full-time job as an industrial sewer, Peggy made time to visit Jennifer every day. She brought life into Jennifer’s room, talking to her, holding spa days, and ensuring she felt loved and not forgotten.
In August 2022, the unexpected breakthrough occurred. Jennifer laughed for the first time in five years when Peggy told a joke to her. “Every dream came true. Today’s the day I said, ‘That door that was closed, that kept us apart, had just opened. We were back,’” Peggy shared.
Jennifer’s journey of recovery is filled with small victories, each celebrated by Peggy and her grandsons, who had grown up in their mother’s absence.
The joy of reuniting with her children and even becoming a grandmother added layers of happiness to their lives.
Peggy and Jennifer’s story is a testimony of God’s love and faithfulness. They encourage us to trust in God and love one another, even when we face the most challenging situations. They remind us that God can do the impossible, and that He answers our prayers in His perfect timing.
