A girl who has given birth aged 11 is believed to be the youngest ever mother in the UK with a family unaware she was pregnant, according to reports.
The young girl, who was 10 years old when she got pregnant, gave birth earlier this month. Both the mother and the baby are healthy, according to the Sun.
Now social services are investigating the circumstances surrounding the pregnancy and speaking to her family who were unaware of the pregnancy, the newspaper adds.
Someone told The Sun newspaper: “It was a big surprise. Now she’s getting help from experts.
The important thing is that both she and the baby are okay. It’s concerning that nobody knew about this.”
The previous youngest mother is said to be Tressa Middleton when she gave birth in 2006, aged 12.
But she was forced to give her up after confessing the child’s dad was her brother.
When her daughter was born in 2006, Tressa Middleton became the youngest mother in British history.
In 2014, a mother and father who were both 12 years old and 13 years old set the record for the youngest parents.
Puberty normally begins around 11 for girls but it can span from eight to 14, with weight playing a factor.
There is a higher risk of problems developing when younger children are pregnant including premature labour, infections and pre-eclampsia.
There was a reported case in 2017 of another girl in the UK giving birth aged 11 but no further details emerged.
Tressa, seen in a photo with her second child Arihanna, expressed how glad she was after facing issues with her first baby.
The youngest mother ever recorded was a girl from Peru named Lina Medina. She was only five years and seven months old when she gave birth to a boy named Gerardo in May 1939.
Initially, her parents thought she had a tumor, but when she was taken to the hospital, doctors discovered she was seven months pregnant.
